Widad's Memoirs - Part 7

A year after we lived in a rented house, my father decided to build a house for the family. One of his customers, an Italian guy, built him a cape cod styled house in West Hempstead. After a while, my father thought it was too small. He had his eyes on a 100x100ft corner lot two blocks away from our present house on Wilson Street. He bought the lot and built a big red brick ranch house all for $30,000.  It was really nice and had a finished basement that they eventually used as a rental.

I got married when I was 20 years old to George K. George. We had a double wedding with his brother Fred and his wife to be Pauline Boulus. She also lived in West Hempstead. We married in two different churches; George and I in an Eastern Orthodox Church, Fred and Pauline in a Catholic Church -  on April 24th 1949. The reception was in a big hall in Hempstead. George's mother, with the help of the relatives in Hempstead cooked all the food. She was a great cook. She cooked turkey, stuffing, stuffed squash, stuffed grape leaves, kuba, and many appetizers. It was a lot of fun, our double wedding that everyone enjoyed. We had a famous singer; his name was Amere Kadash, who sang with his orchestra.

George had just finished his army duty. He was drafted when he was attending Cairo University. He was in college three years and served his country for two.

George was born at Pacific Street in Brooklyn. His family went back to the old country for some time before returning to the US for good. His mother raised all her children in Ramallah. They had three sons and three daughters.
