This event, punctuated by this picture of dance partner Emi and me, was otherwise a mirror image of last year's event. I can't remember if any of the candidates who were "installed" as officers of the club were different than last year's.....hummmm?? In addition, a very odd proclamation was read, presumably from the mayor, who conveniently couldn't make it to the event. Gee Wizz - doesn't the mayor have better things to do than keep on politicking? Finally, there were several exhibitions for our enjoyment starting with a salsa by Emi and Greg, and ending with a lovely waltz by Glen and Anne.
The food was predictable and boring beyond words, a few patrons told me they felt sick the next morning. I wouldn't be surprised. The Pacific Beach Hotel Grand Ballroom has seen better days, but it still works to support Hawaii's ballroom dance scene with affordable prices. Still, I'm getting really tired of the predictable buffet, the dismal selection of wines, and the lack of variation in atmosphere.
There are at least a few events held at other venues throughout the year including the Sheraton, the Hilton Hawaiian Village and the Hilton on Kuhio Avenue. I do wish some of our event planners would venture out to other locations to bring life and variation to our ballroom dance events. It is more than ironic that with at least 75 hotels in Waikiki, that event planners stick to the PBH. It would be SO wonderful if every event of the year was held at a different hotel in a different ballroom........ what fun that would be!
