Widad's Memoirs - Part 8
After we got married we lived with my in-laws for one year. They had a big house in Summit New Jersey. We lived on the third floor apartment. My first child was born a year later. Then, we bought a house in Plainfield, New Jersey. We put $1300 as a down payment and took out a mortgage for the rest. In 1958, George bought a bigger house in Warren, New Jersey. It was a better area with 1 ½ acres of land. The town was very country looking and quiet. We paid $26,500 for it with $8,000.00 down, and the rest we paid by mortgage. We sold the other house and moved in. The house was brand new with a nice large and beautiful backyard. By then I had four kids; two boys and two girls.
Across the street the house was for sale. George’s cousin wanted it; he asked us to find out more. When the house was sold, I thanked the Lord. This guy was a real busybody, and was annoying to George and his brothers. Fred and David (George’s brothers) were in the rug business together in 1950. They had two locations; one was a showroom, with a large display of rugs for sale, and the other building they bought for rug and carpet cleaning, servicing and repair.
In 1969, George got out of the partnership. He gave his brothers the main building they all owned, the truck, the equipment, and George kept the building that was used for cleaning and servicing. One of the brothers, Fred, wanted more; George gave him three thousand dollars in cash. George took the empty rug servicing and cleaning building with nothing in it. He had to buy everything he needed to run the business, which he was able to do in time.
