Da Spot - REVIEW

When Lex Brodie was at his prime, he was a very strong supporter of small business enterprises, since he started from nothing to grow a successful tire and front end alignment business. I have always been in awe of Lex and others who take the risk to fight the difficult terrain and stifling state and local climate in starting their own small business in Hawaii.

Ahmad and Ako, husband and wife, own and operate Da Spot, also started from nothing, operating from an inadequate and cramped facility on Pumehana Street, working night and day, and now finally have something to show for it.  They have graduated to a wonderful new location near UH across from Long's Drugs on King Street.   Feel free to read the many reviews on Yelp, and also my blog below regarding some of the menu items and the opinions of others.

The food is indeed a blend of Egyptian, Moroccan and Asian dishes, the variety is plentiful, the cuisine is very friendly to the palate with an amazing blend of vegetables and meats cooked in tasty sauces, flavored by herbs and spices, and all for a very reasonable price.  And as importantly, the food is healthy and balanced; no wonder you can find so many university students frequenting this location!

Last Saturday night, Ako and Ahmad came to my home at my request with three additional staff to cater a going away party....see below.  Now, I do not really know whether they want to encourage the catering service that they agreed to provide me, but if you can convince them, you will not be sorry.  Everyone at the party could not stop talking about the food, how much they enjoyed it and how wonderful it was.  To be sure, I think some folks were reluctant to taste some of the items - because some were unfamiliar - but within short order, the food was disappearing from the table as if it had been bombarded by a swarm of locusts.  At the end of any party, I usually have a ton of leftovers which I expected last Saturday seeing how much food was offered.  This time, almost all of the food had been consumed by the end of the evening.

Ako and Ahmad were wonderful and gracious, came to my home to prepare, serve, and stayed to the end.  They took over my kitchen bringing a million items to prepare and serve with, and left with my kitchen cleaner than when they arrived....I'm truly not exaggerating!   There was nothing that I needed to do after they left other than turn the lights off!.  I cannot say enough good things about the experience, except that if you are thinking of having a party and want it catered, and if you can convince Ahmad and Ako to go the distance, you will be very, very happy with the result.

Thank you Ahmad and Ako!
