Hawaii Star Ball 2012 - Part 2

Well, HSB 2012 is over and my body is drained from all of the day and night activity and having to drive back and forth from home to the Hilton Hawaiian Village twice a day for the competition and then the night time festivities.  Just a few tidbits from the weeks festivities.  More to come in a last segment after Emi sends me some of our pictures to post.

  • Sorry for the smaller than expected or desired number of entries this year.  Seems like the HSB is headed south unless some changes can be made.  The event was pretty much the same as the year before, which was the same as the year before that with a few exceptions...live music for social dancing by Gonzales....and maybe a few other things that I can't remember or didn't notice.
  • Professionals and world rhythm champions Liana Churilova and her partner Emmanuel Pierre-Antoine were simply magnificent.  I was totally mesmerized by Liana's dance ability, style, flexibility and perfect execution and musicality.  When she is competing, her competitors look like amateurs dancing in slow motion by comparison.  She is simply one of the most fabulous dancers ever to step on a dance floor, something that she has accomplished in her short life of circa 18-20 years.
  • I had a particularly good time this year.  I was the most happy to receive positive comments about my Chairman's Waltz Solo with Yanna.  I was also gratified by other parts of my experience including dancing the smooth heats with Yanna and the comfort and execution in dancing 14 heats with my amateur dance partner, Emi.  It seems like my hard work has paid off to the extent that I was able to dance more comfortably, and in doing so, exchange my typically anxious and serious demeanor with a sense of enjoyment that truly brought a smile to my face...at least more than in the past.
  • I was happy for Sandy doing so well with professional Lucas.  Our practice sessions together have been mutually beneficial.  In addition to the dancing, we have been practicing walking on and off the dance floor, bowing, and smiling during the performance.  Sandy's frame was fabulous and there wasn't a twitch of disjointed movement that I could see during the heats that I observed... Congratulations Sandy.
The description of this blog suggests that my life is lived in different chapters meant to separate various segments of my life.....1- early through high school and college; 2- medical school, residency and fellowship, and early married life in my 20's in Louisville and San Diego; 3- my family life in Honolulu; 4 - and my widower semi retirement return to adolescent chapter which I currently enjoy.

I also live my life from one dream to the next.  One dream I had about 7 years ago was that I wanted to be able to comfortably and confidently dance the standard ballroom dances navigating around the dance floor respecting the line of dance and looking graceful and happy while dancing.  It has taken a long time, but I now feel moments of joy that fill my heart during dancing.  Thank you to my wonderful dance teacher Yanna Samkova, and my beautiful and tolerant dance partner, Emi.  I also thank my lovely and elegant friend, Sandy for practicing with me and tolerating my dour personality.  Thanks also for the picture displayed above.

More later after Emi sends me some pictures to display.
