My God! What has happened to the most glorious, most romantic, most scenic - restaurant, the most intimate dance venue, and one of the most popular feeding holes for tourists, especially Japanese. Also a popular night spot for locals to frequent, especially on weekends - pretending to be at the Rainbow Room in New York City with your favorite girl or wife? Comfortable tables and intimate booths, waiters in tuxedos, grade B food dressed as A and sold as A+, tasty cappuccino, slow dance music, gazing at the Waikiki skyline, or the fireworks on Friday evening or New Years eve. I could go on.......
But this is what the Sheraton Waikiki management has ostensibly done to the Hanohano Room...see picture above....no hanohano no mo. Looks like an airport lounge. Newspapers, coffee, tourists in shorts pretending to read newspapers while secretly sinking far from consciousness, as this might be one of the most boring places on earth to be at. I was there last night for a look; the waiters and waitresses were nowhere to be found. Only dirty plates, coffee mugs, papers and a concierge desk occupied by two clueless twenties something hotel staff, sitting with a frozen smile, pretending to act a resource to un-inquisitive hotel guests.
It was bad enough that the Monarch Room was renovated out of its beauty and charm, leaving a room devoid of character as an occasional venue for weddings and other special events. Added now is the disappearance of the Hanohano Room that closed several years ago but I was dreaming one day would reopen.
Not much chance of that at least in the near future, and even then, how sad it will be to witness the un-renovation of the Hanohano back to its former self...I might be dead by them. Oh, only if I could be in charge of the Hanohano Room and the Royal Hawaiian Monarch Room....I would be so happy and so would so many others that miss them as much as me.
