University of Hawaii's Best Administrator

I have reached 35 years as a faculty member at UH, not something  many other folks can brag about.  Except for a six months mandatory leave (Act 179), I have worked continuously both in the School of Medicine, and in the Vice Chancellor's Office.  In my estimation, Gary Ostrander is the best administrator that UH has ever had.  He fills my top 3 positions for "best" UH administrators that include Fred Greenwood and James Gaines.  Fred passed away more than a decade ago, and Jim is rumored to retire soon.

Gary just left this morning for a new position at Florida State University.  He will be the #2 man next to the president.  I sent a text this morning as Gary was boarding his flight wishing him the best.  He will be missed big time.  Maybe one day he will be recruited back to serve the university again.  Hopefully the next time, he will have the proper authority and backing to carry out the difficult job of doing the right thing for the University.
